Stand Out from the Noise

Embrace your uniqueness. 

My daughter’s favorite outfit is a bright rainbow-esk, tie-dyed pair of pants, highly coordinated with a clashing t-shirt. Always.

Does she care?  Heck no.

Do people comment on how she “owns it.” Absolutely.

She’s not sheepish about it.

She’s 12, and she knows it seems “crazy” to “normal” standards.

But it screams personality! … her personality.

I often talk about how my 12-year old is the best business coach ever…

Oh the things that we can learn from fearless, uninhibited visionaries.

She’s not espousing – nor am I – that we need to be outlandish and loud to get noticed.

We simply need to BE. OURSELVES.

That is when we attract who we love working with, and who we can help the most.

So, practically speaking, how can we ‘be ourselves’ in a “business sense”?

  • Know Your Story:  You are SO much more than a “consultant” or “coach” or “[insert proper title]”.
  • Stop to think about what your values, your passions, and what makes you unique. Maybe it’s that you’re loud!... maybe it’s that you’re a thoughtful academic (who loves working with other intellectuals). Speak to that!

  • Own it!  At first you’ll think “Is this unprofessional?” “Am I sharing too much?” “What if I turn someone off?” Strike that from your thinking.
  • Remind yourself – many times – that “professional” does not equal ‘looking and talking like everyone else.’ Those who have the courage to share beyond corporate speak, are those that get noticed.

  • Share It With the World:  Don’t keep quiet. Create content. Have conversations. And share all that you are out into the world.
  • Who would you hire? The person who says “Hi, I’m an executive coach.”  - OR – “Hi, I help Fortune 100 CEOs take their next great career leap.”

    If you stay silent, you’re going to attract a LOT of varied clients.
    You’ll waste a lot of time on discovery calls.
    And you’ll probably accept less-than-ideal clients, because you need the income.
    And you’ll cringe, wondering where all of your dream clients are.

    But, if you put more than the average “consultant” or “coach” out there into the world… you WILL stand out. And simply by being you…

    And I promise you, even if you don’t wear tie-dye pants 🙂
