The Dreaded “Introduce Yourself”

How to Introduce Yourself, Personal Branding

We've all been there...

A networking event – in person or online – where we need to stand up (or unmute) in front of dozens of other people. We suddenly stop listening to everyone else and start rehearsing which way we’ll introduce ourselves this time.

Why does that title not seem to fit me?
How do I say how badass I am without sounding braggy?
What can I say to stand out from everyone else in this room?
Oh shoot, I’m up next!

After a couple decades of professional experience, we’re perplexed why this still trips us up?

I believe it’s because our career is a journey. And if we embrace our career as such, a story, more than a title, we can embrace a new way of introducing ourselves.

You can call me a “brand strategist” (snooze) – OR – You can say I elevate women’s voices, locally and globally, by empowering female entrepreneurs and thought-leaders to own their stories and share them with the world. I do this by creating messaging and marketing strategies that get them noticed and gain them clients.

A client of mine was a “PR consultant” OR you could say “a bold leader for organizations in crisis.” (She specialized in Crisis Management PR). Another client was a “Fractional CFO” (I know, what’s that, right?) – OR – “Fortune 100 finance expertise for small businesses ready to match their profit with the level of their passion.”

Try not to get too caught up in the “title” as much as the juicy info you tell after that.

My top-level tips to get your “intro” NAILED:

  • Don’t be afraid to niche down. An “Executive Coach who helps female founders thrive” isn’t as memorable as an “Executive coach helping bold female founders redefine success, by aligning both their life and career goals into an action plan. I want to redefine success."

  • Add a little pizazz... a statistic, personality, a personal tidbit. “I’m a corporate-leader turned life coach, because I experienced first-hand that our definition of success was seriously messed up. I now help executives… ”

  • Stand for something. Don't be afraid to share more than just your what, but your 'why' as well.

I know, easier said than done, as they always like to say.
